Mallorca!
I grew up going to Mallorca as a child, and spent many happy summers there on the Costa de la Calma. In 2018, I was surprised with the news that a dear family friend in Geneva had left me her summer place on the island. At the time, I did not see room for it in my life. As a busy mother of four young children, the idea of getting over to the island seemed out of reach. Indeed, it wasn’t until 2021 when the children started going away to summer camp in Maine that I finally decided to go over there to sell the place. The first week I met with an attorney. The second week I hired a contractor to renovate the kitchen. And by the third week I called my husband to tell him I needed to buy a boat! And so it goes…Mallorca draws you in and unveils her magic. She can be anything you want her to be: city, country, beach, mountain, old, new. You can literally have a completely different experience every single day and take from the island whatever it is that you are looking for. Because of this, it is a fantastic place to host gatherings both intimate and large, and many people choose to bring families or groups of friends together to celebrate on the island of Mallorca.
There is a wide range of beautiful accommodation and endless event spaces in which to entertain. The upcoming openings of luxury brands Four Seasons and Mandarin Oriental, in addition to the already existing St. Regis and Jumeriah, have created a lot of buzz among Americans who are familiar with the chains, but there is an impressive number of luxury hotels that are authentic and unique to Mallorca, so why not try one of those instead? I am reserving judgment on the Four Seasons, however, because they took over the grand old hotel Formentor, for which I have such fond memories of going to as a child. We were not a beach-going sort of family, but this was an exception. My mother, who didn’t have full use of her legs, would have two cabana boys carry her down to the water’s edge to lounge under one of the thatched parasols that are prevalent on the island. That never lasted long and we would hop in a boat to sail around the stunning rocky coastline. Sigh…Hopefully they will have preserved its charm!
For those traveling from the States, the recently added seassonal flight from United flies nonstop from Newark to Palma de Mallorca and makes getting to the island a breeze. Just make sure when booking your flights (and especially your car rental) that you don’t accidentally book to LA Palma in the Canary Islands. I may know someone that happened to…
I am excited to begin expanding my business to Mallorca, and I look forward to sharing the magic of the island with you!
